What is sysex and how to organize .syx FM voice banks

Understand sysex and .syx files and organize 6-operator FM synth voice banks on iPhone, iPad, Mac or the browser with RDX.

What sysex / .syx is

SysEx (System Exclusive) is a kind of MIDI message that carries device-specific data — including a synthesizer's voices (patches). A .syx file is a "dump" of those voices, typically 32- or 64-voice cartridges on 6-operator FM synths.

How RDX helps

RDX opens those .syx cartridges, plays each voice through a built-in 6-operator FM engine and lets you organize everything: rename, reorder, merge voices from many cartridges and export new banks.

Step by step

  1. 1Open RDX (iPhone, iPad, Mac or in the browser) and tap "Open .syx cartridge".
  2. 2Tap a voice to hear it with the on-screen keyboard, your computer keyboard or MIDI.
  3. 3Rename and drag to reorder voices.
  4. 4Select voices from one or several cartridges and export a 32- or 64-voice bank.

Compatibility

RDX works with classic 6-operator FM synthesizers that use .syx cartridges. It is an independent product, not affiliated with any manufacturer.
